The 24/25 yellowfin tuna season in New Zealand has been one for the books, with fish appearing in all sorts of weird and wonderfully accessible places for the first time in decades. Not ones to sit and watch this event unfold on other fishos social platforms, the team of Scott Malcon, Andrew Roades, and Jack Russell went in search of some local yellowfin not too far from the Omaha boat ramp and were rewarded for their efforts. When the anchovy schools start to appear in the Hauraki Gulf it's time to grab the light gear and get amongst some very fun action. Primarily targeting snapper, line class drops down to around 10lbs, rods get a bit longer and softer, and jigheads and softbaits become as small as you can cast. It's a true match-the-hatch scenario as fish are completely locked on to a certain size and colour, so make sure you have a good selection of softbaits onhand.
